The “Grand Canyon State,” home to 21 Native American tribes with ancient connections to the land, is known for its stunning beauty and abundant natural resources. Since the mid-20th century, Arizona has distinguished itself by an ability to attract high-tech industries, especially to the bustling cities of Phoenix and Tucson.
The stamp features artwork by Ed Mell, a native of Phoenix. Well known for his distinctive modernist renderings of the Southwest desert landscape, Mell applies this approach to his portrayal of Cathedral Rock, one of the colorful and much admired sandstone rock formations of Sedona, Arizona. This is his first stamp for the U.S. Postal Service.
